Numerous railroad carriages, some carrying propane, derailed close to the New Mexico state line, prompting the ordering of evacuations.

A train carrying 35 rail cars derailed in New Mexico on Friday afternoon, resulting in evacuations and the closure of a 50-mile section of Interstate 40.

Around 12:40 p.m. on Friday, the train off Interstate 40 near the state border derailed and caught fire, prompting the dispatch of McKinley County Fire & Rescue. According to BNSF Railway, propane was being carried by six of the wrecked train cars.

An update from BNSF Railway states that communities within a two-mile radius of the derailment and fire at the New Mexico-Arizona state boundary are still under evacuation orders.

According to BNSF, traffic is being diverted and Interstate 40 is still closed in both directions. The New Mexico State Police stated on Facebook that there is "no projected end to this closure" at this time.

Later on Saturday, a group of investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are anticipated to arrive. As soon as they arrive, the NTSB said, their investigators would begin taking pictures of the scene and inspecting the train and other machinery that were used in the incident.

There have been no reported injuries. According to BNSF, it is currently assisting the locals who were forced to evacuate and will arrange for the required housing and accommodations.

"BNSF is dedicated to working within Unified Command while ensuring the community is safe and taken care of throughout the duration of the incident, in coordination with all local public safety agencies," the release stated.

In response to the significant derailment, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg stated on social media, "We are coordinating across state, tribal, and local agencies to ensure safety in the region." Please heed local and state instructions on detours around Interstate 40.

Gov. Katie Hobbs of Arizona reacted to the incident on social media as well.

Hobbs added, "I am keeping a careful eye on the situation and am extremely concerned about the train derailment along the Arizona-New Mexico border." "My administration communicates with both the government of New Mexico and Secretary Buttigieg." The State of Arizona is prepared to deploy the resources need to maintain the safety of our communities when we obtain additional information about the situation on the ground.
