Tesla is recalling Cybertrucks because of potentially stuck accelerator pedals.

A roughly 4,000-strong Tesla Cybertruck recall has been mandated due to an accelerator pedal that has the potential to become stuck in place when depressed.  The regulator identified soap as the root problem.

An unauthorized modification included lubricant (soap) to facilitate the pad's component installation onto the accelerator pedal.

The NHTSA noted in the recall document that "residual lubricant weakened the retention of the pad to the pedal."  Tesla has not disclosed the number of Cybertrucks—futuristic-looking vehicles—that it has manufactured. However, it has stated that it will increase manufacture of the car gradually; the first deliveries were made in late November.

"All Model Year ('MY') 2024 Cybertruck vehicles manufactured from November 13, 2023, to April 4, 2024," according to the NHTSA, are affected by the recall.  This implies that the 3,878 trucks that are being recalled represent most, if not all, of the vehicles currently operating on US roadways.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's recall documents state that "the accelerator pedal's pad may become dislodged when considerable force is applied to it, potentially trapping the pedal in the interior trim above the pedal."

According to the safety agency, employees at Tesla's facility near Austin, Texas, mishandled the use of soap to facilitate the assembly of the accelerator pedal pad component.  The problem of the accelerator sticking was initially brought up in posts on social media and internet forums.  The NHTSA announced on Monday that it has contacted Tesla to ask for additional details regarding the problem.

When asked for a remark, Telsa did not reply right away. This month, the corporation informed workers that it will be laying off about 10% of its workforce worldwide.

This Tesla recall cannot be resolved with a straightforward over-the-air software update, in contrast to many others. Owners of Cybertrucks will need to reply to letters from Tesla and bring them into its service centers so that they can be repaired for free.
